Rome, Italy — The Roma City Council has approved a key resolution formally recognizing that the Technical and Economic Feasibility Plan (PFTE) for the proposed new AS Roma stadium in Pietralata meets the requirements established in the city’s declaration of public interest.
The approval marks a significant administrative milestone and clears the way for the measure to proceed to the relevant council commissions and subsequently to a final vote by the Assemblea capitolina. Confirmation by the city council will enable the project to move forward into the next stages of the regional authorization process.
The proposed development spans approximately 27 hectares, including roughly 15 hectares dedicated to public green space, parks, plazas, and pedestrian areas. The stadium is designed with a capacity of 60,605 seats and will feature one of Europe’s largest single-curve stands. In addition to hosting football matches, the facility is planned as a year-round destination incorporating a museum, fan shop, retail areas, hospitality venues, conference facilities, and extensive landscaped areas integrated into the surrounding urban environment.
Mobility and infrastructure improvements are central to the proposal. Plans include new public and private parking facilities, cycling infrastructure, pedestrian pathways, and enhanced connectivity to nearby transit hubs, including Stazione Tiburtina.
The total private investment by AS Roma is estimated at €1.047 billion, covering both the stadium construction and associated public infrastructure works.
” Today is an important day for Rome. The new AS Roma stadium is more than just a sports facility: it is a project that speaks to the future, to regeneration, and to confidence in the city’s ability to deliver quality projects, redeveloping an entire area like Pietralata. We have worked tirelessly to get this far, and we will continue to do so with the same commitment. It is a forward-looking decision that strengthens Rome’s credibility and ability to complete strategic projects for the city ,” said Mayor Roberto Gualtieri.
Up next is a final vote on the project in the middle of March. The beginning of construction is expected to begin in February, 2027.
