El Shaarawy speaks ahead of his last Roma match

Stephan El Shaarawy will be playing his final match in a Roma jersey Sunday against Verona.

He gave an interview to DAZN:

The Verona match will be very tough, how are you preparing for it?

“A crucial match, the most important of the season, because we’re playing for Champions League qualification, which we haven’t done for eight years. Now everything depends on us; with a win, we’d be guaranteed qualification. We’re preparing for it with great enthusiasm, thanks in part to our derby victory.”

Does winning the derby help?

“Certainly, beyond the derby win itself, it’s also important for our confidence and our standings. We’re coming into this match ready, knowing we’re prepared; we deserve to qualify for everything we’ve done this year.”

Fourth place seemed out of reach at one point. What changed?

“This is the Italian championship, it’s a tough competition. A lot can change from one Sunday to the next. Our opponents dropped points, and we capitalized on that. Now we’re just missing the final step to make this a memorable season.”

After the derby, we saw the affection the fans have for you. What does Roma mean to you?

“As I’ve already said, Roma has given me so much, both the club, the team, and the city in general. I grew up here; it’s a place that welcomes you, that immediately gives you so much love and affection, something I found again when I returned in 2021. Feeling all this affection was a great feeling; my time with Roma has been a beautiful story…”

What have you received from Roma fans?

“I’ve received so much affection; it’s a club you have a connection with, and little by little, that connection has strengthened over the years. I’ve always tried to give everything for this shirt, and I think the fans have understood that and recognized it, and that’s enough for me; it will always remain in my memories.”

Was Como a surprise for you? Are there any teams in the top six you weren’t expecting, or any that surprised you more than the others?

“Como had a great season, competing for the Champions League until the final matchday. Inter proved to be the strongest team, while the battle for the top European spots was very close and even, with many teams playing down to the last minute.”
