Marash Kumbulla spoke to Mundo Deportivo at the end of a difficult season spent on loan at Mallorca. The Albanian defender, who is still owned by AS Roma and has two years remaining on his contract with the Giallorossi club, discussed his future and also commented on his return to Trigoria.
Now you’ll have to return to Roma, where you still have two years left on your contract. Recently you said you would have liked to work more with Gasperini.
“He’s one of the top coaches in Italy and in Europe. He proved it with Atalanta and with Roma, whom he brought back to the Champions League after many years. I would have liked to train more under him, but Roma made their decisions. You have to accept them and look for something that convinces you.”
For now, you’ll rejoin Roma.
“I’ll go there to train well, make myself available to the coach, and do the best I can. Then we’ll talk with them, see what they want, and decide.”
One club where people still remember you fondly is Espanyol.
“I also have great memories of them. It was my best season on a personal level, and we achieved our objective. I have a very good relationship with Manolo; we’ve spoken a few times this year. I’m very happy for them. It’s true that the second half of the season was a bit worse, but they were also unlucky. He’s a very good coach, both tactically and in the way he relates to players, and I think that shows. The fans and players care a lot about him too. I have great affection for Espanyol, both as a club and for the team.”
Would you like to return there one day?
“In football, you can never close any doors. We’ll see what happens. I’ve shown that I can adapt to La Liga, so I’m keeping all possibilities open.”
