As Roma’s players who are not involved in international duty enjoy a short summer break following the end of the season, preparations for the 2026–27 campaign are already underway behind the scenes.
The club is currently finalizing plans for its summer training schedule, with preseason expected to begin at Trigoria on July 13 before moving abroad for part of the preparations. According to reports from Spain, one possibility being considered is a high-profile preseason friendly against FC Barcelona in the traditional Joan Gamper Trophy.
Roma Among Clubs Under Consideration
Spanish outlet Sport reports that Roma are one of several teams being evaluated as Barcelona’s opponent for this year’s Gamper Trophy, the annual showcase match traditionally held before the start of the new season. Other clubs said to be in contention include SSC Napoli, Borussia Dortmund, and Cruz Azul.
The match is expected to take place in early August and would provide Roma with a prestigious test against one of Europe’s elite sides as they continue their preseason preparations.
Roma have appeared in the Gamper Trophy only once before. In 2015, a team managed by Rudi Garcia was beaten 3–0 by Barcelona, with goals from Neymar, Lionel Messi, and Ivan Rakitić.
No final decision has yet been announced, but Roma’s inclusion among the candidates suggests the club could be in line for a marquee preseason encounter at Barcelona’s annual curtain-raiser.
