Roma and Basel are looking to compromise over Calafiori sale

Riccardo Calafiori is one of the players who came through Roma’s youth academy and managed to establish himself on the biggest stages. The former Roma defender won the Premier League with Arsenal this season and lost the Champions League final on penalties against PSG.

Before going to Arsenal, the 2002-born defender was sold by Mourinho’s and Pinto’s Roma to Basel for just over €2 million with Roma retaining a 40% sell-on clause for any future transfer.

The player later moved to Bologna, and Roma collected €1.5 million from that deal. However, a dispute then arose over the additional €9 million that Roma has requested from the Swiss club.

Basel sold Calafiori for €43 million, and half of that amount—almost €22 million—ended up in Basel’s coffers. According to the agreement between Roma and the Swiss club, any revenue from the sale of the 2002-born player would require 40% to be paid to Roma.

The two clubs are now working to find a compromise. Calafiori could ultimately be worth €6 million to Roma. As reported by Pietro Torri, the Giallorossi are expected to receive about 60% of the €9 million they would have been entitled to from the player’s transfer from Bologna to Arsenal. This is because Basel received around €22 million, of which 40%—approximately €9 million—would have been due to Roma under the agreement.

This is a figure that can be considered acceptable and should enter Roma’s accounts before next June 30. Such a capital gain would be of vital importance. However, officials at Trigoria are preaching caution: there has been no confirmation of a final agreement between Roma and Basel, although both sides are working toward that outcome.
