Roma is edging closer to appointing Tony D’Amico as its new sporting director, although the official announcement has been delayed by ongoing negotiations with Atalanta over the terms of his departure.
The situation has proven more complicated than initially expected, with financial considerations surrounding D’Amico’s contract emerging as the main obstacle. His agreement with the Bergamo-based club reportedly included a number of performance-related incentives, including development and capital gains bonuses, which Atalanta are seeking to have settled before releasing the executive.
The negotiations have also taken place against the backdrop of tensions following Gian Piero Gasperini’s departure from Atalanta, further complicating discussions between the two clubs’ leadership groups.
According to reports, Atalanta are asking the Friedkin ownership group to cover the outstanding contractual obligations in order to avoid potential legal disputes and bring the matter to a swift conclusion. The club recently parted ways with D’Amico, replacing him with Cristiano Giuntoli, although the formal termination of the previous agreement has yet to be finalized.
A significant breakthrough may have arrived in recent hours. As reported by Manà Manà Sport, Roma Chief Financial Officer Jason Morrow has opened direct talks with Atalanta CEO Luca Percassi to negotiate a severance package that would finally unlock the deal.
The meeting between the two executives is expected to be decisive, with optimism growing that an agreement can be reached in the coming days. Should the talks conclude successfully, Roma are expected to formally announce D’Amico’s arrival early next week.
