AS Roma have identified Atlético Madrid defender Matteo Ruggeri as a potential target as the Giallorossi continue to assess options for strengthening the left side of their squad ahead of the upcoming transfer window.
According to transfer journalist Nicolò Schira, Roma have shown interest in the Italian left-back, who currently plays for Atlético Madrid after joining the Spanish club from Atalanta in the summer of 2025.
Ruggeri, 23, is regarded as one of Italy’s most promising full-backs. A product of Atalanta’s renowned academy, he established himself in Bergamo before earning a move to Atlético Madrid on a long-term contract running until 2030.
Roma’s interest comes as the club looks to reinforce its defensive flanks, with the left-back position viewed as an area where additional depth and quality could be beneficial. Ruggeri’s profile fits the type of player Roma have targeted in recent years: young, technically sound, and with experience at both domestic and European levels.
The Italian defender is known for his athleticism, crossing ability, and versatility, having operated as both a traditional left-back and a wing-back throughout his career. His development under Gian Piero Gasperini at Atalanta helped him gain recognition as one of Serie A’s emerging defensive talents before his transfer to La Liga.
While no formal negotiations have been reported at this stage, Roma’s interest suggests the club is actively monitoring Ruggeri’s situation in Madrid. Schira reported that the Giallorossi have made an enquiry regarding the player as they explore potential options for the position.
Whether Atlético Madrid would be willing to part ways with Ruggeri remains uncertain. The defender arrived only last year and remains under a long-term contract, although competition for places and squad planning could influence any future discussions.
With the summer transfer window approaching, Ruggeri is a name that could continue to attract attention from clubs across Europe, and Roma appear to be among the sides keeping a close watch on the Italian full-back’s future.
