Gian Piero Gasperini has made his position clear in discussions over Roma’s future squad planning: he wants to keep the defensive unit that underpinned the recently concluded season and build on its success. This is according to Il Tempo.
Roma finished the campaign with the second-best defensive record in Serie A, conceding just 31 goals in 38 matches. The four pillars of the Giallorossi back line find themselves in different situations: Mile Svilar is considered untouchable, Mario Hermoso is expected to stay after triggering his one-year contract extension, while Gianluca Mancini has been identified by Gasperini as a key figure in the project. Evan Ndicka, meanwhile, remains the defender most frequently linked with a move away.
The Ivorian centre-back, born in 1999, is widely viewed as the leading candidate to leave the capital, with several foreign clubs reportedly interested in his services. However, Gasperini would prefer Roma to generate the capital gains required by June 30 through the sales of Jan Ziolkowski and Daniele Ghilardi rather than parting ways with Ndicka.
