After missing two clear chances in recent friendly matches, Donyell Malen has come under scrutiny in the Netherlands ahead of the World Cup.
The Roma striker, who has impressed with 15 goals in 20 appearances since January for the Giallorossi, has faced growing criticism for his lack of sharpness in front of goal during recent international outings.
Netherlands coach Ronald Koeman sought to calm the debate during the team’s training camp in Kansas City, stating: “Malen has shown he can score. He hasn’t forgotten how. It would be more worrying if it were a matter of commitment, but that’s not the case. Efficiency is crucial in football, and unfortunately it was very low — too low.”
To help improve finishing efficiency across the squad, Malen is also working under the guidance of Dutch legend Ruud van Nistelrooy, who is involved in monitoring the national team’s attacking unit ahead of the tournament.
Koeman joked about the former striker’s influence, saying: “So it’s his fault!” before adding: “I see him every day with his laptop, sitting with the players, showing videos and discussing decisions. Ruud has great experience and can help us a lot.”
Despite recent criticism, Malen has regained consistency and confidence at Roma, and will look to carry that form onto the international stage. The Netherlands are aiming to sharpen their finishing ahead of the World Cup, with Malen expected to play an important role in proving his reliability in front of goal.
