Roma’s interest in Matteo Ruggeri may have suffered an unexpected setback following Real Madrid’s imminent signing of Marc Cucurella from Chelsea.
The Spanish giants moved quickly to secure the left-back after receiving strong backing from José Mourinho, with the deal reportedly agreed over the last 24 hours. Atlético Madrid had also opened talks for Cucurella and were considering an accelerated move of their own, but Real ultimately won the race.
At first glance, the transfer may seem unrelated to Roma’s pursuit of Ruggeri. In reality, however, it could have a significant impact on the Italian’s future.
Atlético Madrid have been open to listening to offers for Ruggeri and value him at €20m. Roma have identified as a potential reinforcement for the left flank and a player already familiar with Gian Piero Gasperini’s methods from their time together at Atalanta.
The Spanish club’s willingness to negotiate was partly linked to the possibility of bringing in a replacement.
With Cucurella now heading to Real Madrid instead of Atlético, Diego Simeone’s side could be forced to rethink their plans in the left-back department. The failure to land one of their primary targets may make Atlético less inclined to sanction Ruggeri’s departure until they secure an alternative solution.
That development would naturally complicate matters for Roma, who have been monitoring the 22-year-old closely alongside other Serie A clubs. While the Giallorossi remain interested, Atlético’s need to maintain depth on the left flank could strengthen their negotiating position and delay any potential talks.
