Julio Sergio Praises Wesley’s Growth and Svilar’s Impact at Roma

Former Roma goalkeeper Julio Sergio has shared his thoughts on the current state of the Giallorossi, speaking in an interview with Radio Manà Manà where he discussed Wesley’s adaptation, Mile Svilar’s rise, and the club’s broader ambitions.

One of the main topics was Wesley’s impressive start to life in the capital. The Brazilian was not surprised by the winger’s rapid development, highlighting both his characteristics and the coaching staff’s role in unlocking his potential.

“Wesley has important characteristics. Then, obviously, the coach was very good at changing his role out of necessity, and he was a marvel,” Julio Sergio explained. “It’s a bit like what happened to Mancini or Taddei when they arrived in Italy, when their original positions were adapted. I knew Wesley had energy and desire: he always puts his heart and soul on the pitch. I wouldn’t say it was a total surprise, but he was very quick and intelligent in taking advantage of the coach’s trust.”

The former goalkeeper also suggested that Roma should consider keeping the youngster in the capital for at least another season to continue his development in a stable environment.

“The boy has settled in well, and they confirmed to me at Trigoria that his family is happy. The risk when you leave for these top clubs is that you don’t play consistently and struggle to express your potential. Perhaps spending another year in Rome, consolidating his level, wouldn’t be a bad thing. Then, if a big financial offer arrives, it will be beneficial for both the player and Roma. We’ll see what happens.”

Julio Sergio then turned his attention to Mile Svilar, who has established himself as Roma’s first-choice goalkeeper and one of the most reliable performers in the squad.

“He does the most important thing for a goalkeeper: he makes saves and brings home points, as he showed in the last match with a great save. He’s very reactive, has excellent physical presence, and is a polite, easy-going guy who immediately understood what it means to be Roma’s goalkeeper. A goalkeeper who gives confidence also helps the defenders feel more secure.”

While praising Svilar’s current level, Julio Sergio also noted areas for improvement, particularly in distribution and decision-making outside the box.

“Obviously he can improve with his feet or in coming off his line, but that applies to everyone. Football is so fast now; you have milliseconds to decide. I don’t know what his limits are, but he has the right mentality and physical tools to keep improving.”

The former Roma number one’s comments underline both the optimism surrounding key young players and the belief that continued development will be crucial to the club’s future ambitions.
