The Netherlands’ 5-1 victory over Sweden at the World Cup brought another encouraging performance from Crysencio Summerville, a player who continues to attract interest from AS Roma.
After the match, Dutch coach Ronald Koeman explained his decision to replace Donyell Malen with Summerville, highlighting a quality that could make the winger even more attractive to Roma.
“Our wingers continued to press their central defender, while it’s usually the numbers 9 and 10 who do that. As a result, we found ourselves in serious trouble a couple of times. This was also the reason for Malen’s substitution.”
Koeman then singled out Summerville for his defensive contribution.
“I think Summerville is better defensively.”
The Dutch manager stressed that tactical discipline is essential at the highest level, regardless of individual status.
“We often talk to the players about the need to recognize changes on the pitch more quickly. I understand that substitution is difficult for Donyell, but this is high-level football. A team performance is expected.”
For Roma, who are evaluating options to strengthen the wings this summer, Koeman’s comments offer further evidence of Summerville’s versatility. While his attacking qualities are already well known, his willingness to work defensively could make him an even more appealing profile for a team looking to balance creativity with tactical discipline.
