Mourinho Reflects on Roma Regret: “The Conference League win was crazy”

José Mourinho has revisited some of the most significant moments of his career, including his spell at Roma, during an appearance on the Beast Mode On Podcast hosted by former striker Adebayo Akinfenwa. The Portuguese coach spoke about European finals, trophies, and the emotional impact of his time in the Italian capital.

When asked which match from his past he would most like to relive, Mourinho immediately pointed to Roma’s Europa League final defeat against Sevilla. “If you could relive one match from your past, which one would it be? The Europa League final with Roma, against Sevilla. With a different referee,” he said, making a clear reference to controversial officiating in the game.

The former Roma manager also highlighted the emotional importance of the 2022 UEFA Europa Conference League triumph. “I’ve won a few things in football, but when we won the Conference League in Rome… the city went crazy. I believe that a Champions League won in another city would not have felt the same. Rome is a city where people love the club very, very much. A giant club, with incredible passion. It was also the first season of the Conference League. I don’t even think in Europe the trophy had the same value it has now, but when we returned to Rome we had a parade through the city. The Colosseum, the Circus Maximus… there we realised what we had given to the people. Compared to the start of my career, when I used to think about my goals and my feelings, at that moment I realised how important the people around me were, the players. What we achieved in Rome was absolutely incredible,” Mourinho said.

When asked which match he would choose to replay in his career, Mourinho was again direct: “The final against Sevilla! Without Anthony Taylor.” His comments once again underline the lasting emotional connection he built with Roma, where he delivered the club’s first European trophy in decades.
