Former Roma assistant coach Salvatore Foti has reflected on his time in the capital, sharing heartfelt stories about Lorenzo Pellegrini and Paulo Dybala during an interview with Radio Romanista.
Foti reserved special praise for Roma captain Pellegrini, revealing that their relationship grew into a close friendship away from the pitch.
“We’re talking about a spectacular guy, beyond the professional he is,” Foti said. “When you share certain moments, you remain connected forever.”
He also defended the midfielder’s recent performances, pointing to his consistent goal contributions despite injury setbacks.
“He’s always had impressive numbers for a midfielder. Last year he scored seven goals despite physical problems. I even texted him the day before the derby because I was sure he would score.”
Foti also revisited the famous Conference League celebrations, revealing that he was the one who started the now-iconic chant urging Roma’s owners to sign Paulo Dybala.
“It was my personal initiative. I knew there was a chance it could happen, so I grabbed the microphone. Tiago Pinto didn’t take it very well, but I was carried away by the excitement.”
Looking back, Foti admitted he has always been captivated by Dybala’s talent.
“I’m in love with Paulo’s footballing ability. Without physical problems, he could play on the moon. When they told me about him, I immediately said: ‘Bring him.’”
The former assistant to José Mourinho also discussed the Europa League final defeat to Sevilla and the Portuguese coach’s departure from Roma during the interview.
