Professor Mariani: Paulo Dybala Can Play at the Highest Level Until Age 40

Paulo Dybala’s long-term future received a major vote of confidence from Professor Pier Paolo Mariani, the surgeon who operated on the Argentine’s knee.

In an interview with Il Tempo, Mariani dismissed the notion that Dybala is a physically fragile player, insisting the Roma star can continue performing at the highest level for many years with the right management.

“Dybala is an absolute champion. His problems have mainly been muscle injuries or functional overload—not a lack of endurance or physical fragility. With personalized training and proper prevention, he can maintain a high level and play until he’s 40.”

Mariani also reassured supporters that Dybala made a complete recovery from the knee surgery he performed, describing the meniscus injury as a normal occurrence during a professional footballer’s career.

“After the operation, he made a full recovery, and he showed that clearly at the end of the season.”

The renowned surgeon went a step further, saying he would have no hesitation keeping the Argentine at Roma for years to come.

“If I were president, I’d keep him until he’s 40. Managed properly, he can continue performing at a very high level.”

Drawing a comparison with Francesco Totti, whom he operated on several times during his career, Mariani believes Dybala can enjoy similar longevity with the right support.

Looking ahead to the new season under Gian Piero Gasperini, Mariani is confident Roma’s medical and fitness staff can maximize the Argentine’s availability.

“A champion of this level, managed by Gasperini and supported by his staff, can play 90% of the matches.”
