Morocco are into the World Cup quarter-finals after a commanding 3-0 win over Canada, continuing their impressive run on the international stage.
Their next test will be against France, who edged past Paraguay thanks to a penalty from Kylian Mbappé. The quarter-final is scheduled for Thursday, July 9 at 22:00, and it will carry a strong Roma angle.
At least one Giallorossi player will see his World Cup dream come to an end. Neil El Aynaoui and Anass Salah-Eddine will represent Morocco, while Manu Koné will line up for France in what promises to be one of the most intriguing ties of the round.
After the win over Canada, El Aynaoui reflected on Morocco’s performance and confirmed he remains in contact with Roma’s new coach Gian Piero Gasperini.
“Canada started the game very well, we less so,” El Aynaoui said. “In the second half, we found ways to be more dangerous. We know there are no easy matches at the World Cup, but Canada showed great intensity in the first half and surprised us a bit.”
Asked whether he has spoken with Gasperini, the Roma midfielder replied: “Yes. I’m in touch with the staff, we’ll be in contact by message.”
For Roma, the quarter-final offers another chance to watch three of their players compete at the highest level — but only one side will move closer to the World Cup dream.
