Roma midfielder Manu Koné is preparing for one of the biggest matches of his career as France take on Spain in tonight’s FIFA World Cup semi-final.
With just four teams remaining in the tournament, Didier Deschamps’ side will battle for a place in the final against the winner of Wednesday’s clash between Argentina and England.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, however, Koné may not be included in the starting lineup. Aurélien Tchouaméni has recovered in time for the semi-final and is expected to partner Adrien Rabiot in midfield, which would leave the Roma midfielder among the substitutes.
Despite the possibility of starting on the bench, Koné has enjoyed an impressive tournament, with his performances attracting growing interest from several of Europe’s biggest clubs.
He is also the only remaining Roma player still competing in the World Cup after France eliminated Morocco, ending the tournament for Neil El Aynaoui and Anass Salah-Eddine.
Regardless of tonight’s result, Koné’s return to Trigoria will have to wait. If France defeat Spain, they will play in the World Cup final on July 19. Otherwise, they will compete in the third-place playoff on July 18.
Meanwhile, uncertainty continues to surround Koné’s future at Roma, with speculation over a potential summer transfer intensifying in recent weeks as several top European clubs monitor the French international.
