Roma head coach Gian Piero Gasperini has urged the club to move more quickly in the transfer market stressing that the Giallorossi still need several quality additions ahead of the new season.
Speaking at his first press conference ahead of the 2026/27 season Gasperini admitted negotiations have been progressing too slowly.
“There’s slowness in closing deals. Çelik was leaving anyway, but we thank him for what he gave us. We need to be better because the transfer market moves quickly. Now Ryan Friedkin is here at Trigoria, and that can help us.”
The Roma manager said Champions League qualification alone was not enough to resolve the club’s Financial Fair Play situation.
“I hoped qualifying for the Champions League would solve our FFP issues, but it didn’t. When unexpected situations arise, you have to react. The club has some flaws, but it also has many strengths.”
Gasperini believes Roma must strengthen the squad with several important signings.
“We need three or four quality additions to last season’s squad. If someone leaves, they must be replaced.”
On Lorenzo Pellegrini, Gasperini expressed hope that the captain would renew his contract, although he remains sidelined through injury.
“I hope Pellegrini renews, but he still wouldn’t be able to train because he has to recover from his injury.”
The coach also addressed speculation surrounding Matías Soulé, dismissing much of the transfer noise.
“These situations are often driven by agents. What matters is whether there are real negotiations. Soulé came back a few kilos overweight, but he’s working hard.”
Gasperini added that Roma’s UEFA settlement agreement does not prevent the club from signing players, while confirming he is currently keeping a smaller midfield group by choice to ensure every player receives opportunities.
Finally, he ruled out moves for Crysencio Summerville and Mason Greenwood, explaining that both players fall outside Roma’s current wage structure.
“Summerville or Greenwood? They aren’t attainable because of our salary cap, and I think that’s the right approach. It’s not fair for players who helped the club qualify for the Champions League to suddenly be overtaken in wages.”
