Roma are edging closer to completing the signing of Crysencio Summerville with the Dutch winger emerging as Gian Piero Gasperini’s top attacking target ahead of the new Champions League campaign.
Speaking to Retesport, former Ajax scout Michel Kreek praised Summerville’s qualities and believes the 2001-born winger has everything needed to succeed in Serie A.
“He can do great things in Serie A”
Kreek admitted Summerville’s rise has surprised many in the Netherlands because he never featured in the Eredivisie after leaving Feyenoord’s academy at a young age.
“He did very well at the World Cup and for us Dutch it was surprising, given that he is not very well known because he has never played in the Eredivisie. He came through Feyenoord’s academy but left very early to gain experience in England.”
The former Ajax coach believes the Premier League has helped shape Summerville into a complete attacking player.
“He did well at West Ham. He’s a quick and agile player who knows how to beat his man. He scores goals and provides assists. He does a bit of everything. Summerville is a fun winger and beautiful to watch. In Serie A he can do great things because he’s very quick and has excellent dribbling ability, which is a very important quality for an attacker.”
Praise for Malen and Rensch
Kreek also spoke about Roma’s other Dutch players, starting with Donyell Malen.
“I didn’t expect him to be so effective at Roma. In Holland he’s not known for having these qualities. Unfortunately, at the World Cup he couldn’t build on what he achieved with the Giallorossi. He’s happy in Italy and I had the same experience when I arrived. His characteristics are well suited to Serie A.”
On Devyne Rensch, Kreek believes the defender has the potential to establish himself as a regular starter.
“He can become a starter at Roma. He has great potential because I saw him develop at Ajax. He’s shy, but once he gains confidence he can make the leap in quality. He needs personality.”
Godts compared to Summerville
Finally, Kreek discussed Ajax winger Mika Godts, another player who has been linked with Roma.
“Last year he exploded and did very well. He’s similar to Summerville. Technically and in one-on-one situations he’s even better, but he’s not as quick. With the ball at his feet he can make the difference. He’s still very young after only one season in the Eredivisie. I’m not convinced he can immediately do great things at a club like Roma because he still needs more experience.”
