Former Roma midfielder Alberto Aquilani admits facing his old club from the dugout will be one of the most emotional moments of his first season as a Serie A head coach.
Speaking to Sky Sport, the new Sassuolo manager reflected on beginning his coaching journey in Italy’s top flight.
“It’s a great feeling to start this journey in Serie A. It really motivates me. We’re working well and as the start of the season gets closer, the emotions will only grow.”
Aquilani also spoke about the many familiar faces he will encounter this season, including former Roma teammate Daniele De Rossi, who is now in charge of Genoa.
“Serie A is full of reunions for me. I’ve been around and worked with many coaches. Daniele and I grew up together, so it will be strange to face each other from the bench. And Roma will obviously be another special day.”
The fixture against the Giallorossi is expected to be particularly meaningful for Aquilani, who came through Roma’s academy and enjoyed several years with the club before beginning his coaching career.
