Former Roma midfielder Tommaso Baldanzi says his decision to join Genoa was driven by one simple goal: playing football and enjoying the game again.
Speaking to Il Secolo XIX, the 2003-born attacking midfielder reflected on his move from the Giallorossi and admitted he quickly knew where he wanted his future to be.
“To be happy. And what makes me happy is playing, being on the pitch and having fun.”
Baldanzi revealed he fell in love with Genoa during his initial spell at the club and pushed to make the move permanent.
“It was a bit of a battle,” he said with a smile. “I want to thank the club, De Rossi and my agent. When I came to Genoa six months ago, I immediately fell in love with everything. After a few days I called my agent and said, ‘I want to stay.’ At the end of the season it took a few days of waiting, but everything worked out.”
Despite leaving Roma, Baldanzi spoke positively about his time in the capital while admitting regular football became his priority.
“I’m happy with my experience at Roma, but here I know I can express myself, play more and become a more important player. At this stage of my career, playing consistently is crucial.”
The Italian also praised Genoa coach Daniele De Rossi, who previously coached him at Roma.
“I owe him a lot and I’m grateful. It’s an extra motivation to repay the faith he has shown in me. I have a great relationship with him. On the pitch he asks the same things of me that he did last season, and I enjoy playing both as a right midfielder and as an attacking midfielder.”
Baldanzi will now look to establish himself as a key player under De Rossi after choosing regular playing time over remaining at Roma.
