Donyell Malen has spoken about life in the Italian capital, his relationship with Gian Piero Gasperini, and his ambitions for the upcoming season in an interview with Il Messaggero.
The Dutch forward admitted he has quickly fallen in love with both the club and the city.
“Roma is exceptional. It’s a wonderful place to live. Between the weather, the beauty of the monuments and the warmth of the people, it’s a fantastic city.”
Malen revealed that he and his family have settled in well and said he has already started dreaming about bringing another Scudetto to the Giallorossi.
“My family and I are very happy here. I’m scoring goals, I have a great relationship with my teammates and the supporters are incredible. A few weeks ago I watched footage of Roma’s 2001 Scudetto celebrations at Circus Maximus. Experiencing something like that would be amazing. It would be a dream.”
The former Borussia Dortmund attacker also addressed his personal goals for the campaign.
“Top scorer? I hope so, but I prefer to take things one week at a time and keep improving. Goals are important, but the biggest achievement last season wasn’t my tally. It was qualifying for the Champions League after seven years. If we can repeat that, it would be fantastic for both me and the team.”
Malen praised Gian Piero Gasperini, explaining that the Roma coach has helped him produce his best football.
“The biggest difference is the confidence he has shown in me and how clearly he explains what he wants. It’s difficult not to understand his ideas. He knows my qualities and puts me in the best position to finish the team’s moves.”
The Dutch international also commented on Roma’s transfer business, speaking about Crysencio Summerville and Givairo Read.
“I spoke with Crys. Unfortunately it didn’t work out, but I don’t want to comment on a friend’s decisions. I just wish him all the best. As for Read, I haven’t spoken to him. I know him, he plays for Feyenoord, he’s very young and has great quality. He’s a player who could definitely help us.”
Finally, Malen looked ahead to Roma’s return to Europe’s biggest competition.
“Playing in the Champions League is special. How far can we go? I don’t know, but if we stay united and humble, we can have a very good campaign.”
