Roma midfielder Bryan Cristante says the Giallorossi are eager to return to the Champions League after securing qualification with an impressive Serie A campaign last season.
Speaking to Sky Sport from Roma’s training camp in Wales, Cristante reflected on the excitement surrounding the new season, Lorenzo Pellegrini’s renewal and the club’s ambitions under Gian Piero Gasperini.
“We can’t wait for the Champions League”
Cristante admitted the squad is counting down the days until Roma’s return to Europe’s biggest competition.
“Very, very, very eager. We’ve been close for a few seasons, but we finally managed to get back there after a great season. We can’t wait to get started.”
The midfielder also revealed he would love the opportunity to play at the renovated Santiago Bernabéu.
“I’ve been there before, but I’d love to see the new Bernabéu. Real Madrid are still Real Madrid, and we’d also get to see Mourinho again.”
On the Friedkin ownership
Cristante praised the presence of Roma’s ownership during pre-season, saying it gives everyone confidence as the club continues to work in the transfer market.
“It’s important that the club is always present. Right now they’re focused on the transfer market, then we’ll have other discussions once the squad is complete.”
Pellegrini’s renewal
The Italian international also welcomed Lorenzo Pellegrini’s new contract, revealing the captain kept his teammates informed throughout the negotiations.
“We’ve spoken to him. He’s kept us updated every step of the way. We can’t wait to have him back with us.”
Dybala disagreement quickly resolved
Cristante also addressed his recent disagreement with Paulo Dybala, insisting the situation was blown out of proportion.
“It wasn’t an argument between me and him. It was about other things. One second and it was over.”
Scudetto ambitions
Asked whether Roma can challenge for the Serie A title, Cristante admitted winning the Scudetto remains a dream but stressed the club must first build on last season’s success.
“It’s always a dream, but it’s still early. First we want to repeat last season, stay in the top four and have a strong Champions League campaign. If we’re still there in January or February, then we’ll try to fight for it.”
With Roma’s preparations continuing in Wales, Cristante made it clear the squad’s immediate objective is another consistent campaign while continuing the club’s growth under Gasperini.
