Roma are stepping up their search for a new left winger as Gian Piero Gasperini continues to wait for reinforcements ahead of the new season.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Giallorossi have intensified contacts for Malick Fofana with the Lyon winger emerging as one of the club’s leading targets after negotiations for Antonio Nusa became increasingly difficult.
The 2005-born Belgian has been admired by sporting director Tony D’Amico for some time and is now viewed as one of the strongest alternatives to the RB Leipzig star.
Lyon holding firm on valuation
Despite Roma’s growing interest, completing a deal will not be straightforward.
Lyon are reportedly asking for around €45 million, a figure Roma consider too high. The Giallorossi hope to lower the price during negotiations or explore a more favourable deal structure.
Roma are also carefully assessing Fofana’s fitness after ankle problems disrupted parts of his campaign last season, although there are no doubts about the winger’s talent and potential.
Leipzig could enter the race
Roma may also face fresh competition for the Belgian international.
The report claims RB Leipzig are monitoring Fofana as a possible replacement following the sale of Yan Diomandé to Real Madrid. With significant funds now available, the Bundesliga club could challenge Roma for the 20-year-old’s signature.
As the start of the Serie A season approaches, D’Amico continues to work on multiple attacking targets, with the coming days expected to be decisive in determining whether Roma make a concrete move for Fofana or pursue another option.
