Roma are preparing to begin the new Serie A season without making another addition in midfield, with Gian Piero Gasperini ready to continue with the same core options from last season.
The Giallorossi currently have Bryan Cristante, Manu Koné, Niccolò Pisilli and Neil El Aynaoui available in the middle of the pitch. Roma have not opened negotiations for another midfielder and would only enter the market if Koné leaves.
The Frenchman’s future is not completely certain, but with only 11 days remaining before the Serie A opener against Fiorentina, finding a suitable replacement would become increasingly difficult. Koné returned to training on Tuesday and will combine group sessions with individual work as he rebuilds his fitness following his extended summer break.
Roma have also resisted interest in Pisilli. Porto reportedly approached the Giallorossi in June with a €25 million offer for the academy graduate, but the proposal was immediately rejected.
Gasperini does not want Pisilli to leave and Roma share that position. His status as a club-trained player is also important for the club’s UEFA squad registration requirements.
El Aynaoui completes Gasperini’s main midfield group, while Lorenzo Pellegrini could also drop into a deeper role when required. Unless Koné leaves, Roma therefore appear ready to begin the season with their existing midfield options.
