Daniele De Rossi has underlined the importance of the Coppa Italia ahead of Genoa’s first competitive match of the new season.
Genoa will host Ascoli on Sunday, August 16 in the opening round of the competition. Speaking ahead of the match, the former Roma captain insisted there is no reason for his team to underestimate the tournament.
“There’s no reason why anyone should disregard the Coppa Italia,” De Rossi said. “The fans still have to dream. Obviously, if Genoa don’t win the Coppa Italia it won’t be a failure, but we’ll keep going. It could become a beautiful story.”
De Rossi then looked back on his own success in the competition with Roma, where he lifted the trophy twice during his playing career.
“It’s the only trophy I won as a player and when we won it at Roma, we celebrated it as if it were the Champions League.”
De Rossi won back-to-back Coppa Italia titles with Roma in 2007 and 2008, with those triumphs remaining among the defining moments of his career with the Giallorossi.
