Lyon manager Fonseca expects Malick Fofana to be in return leg of Champions League

Paulo Fonseca expects Malick Fofana to remain at Lyon for Fenerbahçe return leg

The Lyon coach described the Roma transfer target as an important player following the first leg of their Champions League qualifier.

Paulo Fonseca expects Malick Fofana to be available for Lyon’s Champions League qualifying return leg against Fenerbahçe despite continued speculation surrounding the winger’s future.

Lyon were held to a 1-1 draw in the opening leg in Turkey. Loïs Openda gave the French side the lead in the 40th minute before Mason Greenwood equalized two minutes after the interval.

Fofana started the match and remained on the pitch until the 90th minute. The Belgian winger struggled to make a significant attacking impact, particularly after fading from the game during the second half.

Speaking to Canal+ after the match, Fonseca was asked whether he expected the Roma transfer target to feature in the return leg.

“I think so,” Fonseca said. “He is very important. I believe in all the players in our team. They will be ready for the next match.”

Lyon will host Fenerbahçe in the second leg on Wednesday, August 26, with the tie level at 1-1.
