Ben Jacobs: Chelsea reject Roma loan approach for Jamie Gittens
Ben Jacobs also confirms Chelsea have rejected an approach from Roma to sign Jamie Gittens on loan. The English winger is considered part of Xabi Alonso’s plans and is expected to remain with the Premier League club this summer.
The Blues consider the English winger part of Xabi Alonso’s plans and have ruled out a temporary departure
Chelsea have rejected Roma’s offer to sign Jamie Bynoe-Gittens as the Giallorossi continue searching for another attacking reinforcement.
According to Gianluca Di Marzio, Roma proposed a €3 million loan fee with an option to buy the winger for €40 million. The purchase clause would not have included any conditions requiring the Giallorossi to make the transfer permanent.
Chelsea have refused the offer and made it clear that Bynoe-Gittens is not available for sale or loan.
Fabrizio Romano has also confirmed that the Premier League club are not open to allowing the Englishman to join Roma. As initially reported by Ben Jacobs, Chelsea consider the 22-year-old part of Xabi Alonso’s plans and expect him to remain at Stamford Bridge beyond the end of the transfer window.
The rejection leaves little room for negotiations unless Chelsea unexpectedly reconsider their position during the closing stages of the market.
Roma forced to consider alternatives
Bynoe-Gittens had emerged as a concrete target as Roma attempted to provide Gian Piero Gasperini with another offensive wide player.
The England youth international made 27 appearances across all competitions during his first season with Chelsea, scoring once and providing five assists.
Before moving to London, he made 107 senior appearances for Borussia Dortmund and scored 17 goals. His ability to operate from the left flank made him an attractive tactical option for Gasperini’s squad.
However, Chelsea’s refusal to discuss either a loan or a permanent sale means Roma must turn their attention toward other attacking targets.
Sporting director Tony D’Amico continues to assess players who could be signed through formulas carrying limited immediate costs. With Bynoe-Gittens currently unavailable, Roma will need to identify another opportunity before the transfer window closes.
