Lyon winger Malick Fofana, who reportedly wants to remain at the club if they qualify for the Champions League

Sacha Tavolieri: Malick Fofana wants to stay at Lyon if club qualifies for Champions League

9:26 AM ET — Alfredo Pedullà: Malick Fofana remains on Roma’s shortlist

According to Alfredo Pedullà, Roma continue to include Malick Fofana on their extremely limited shortlist of attacking wingers. The Giallorossi are expected to assess their remaining options and reach a final decision on whether to pursue the Lyon player soon.

The Belgian winger reportedly intends to complete another full season in France before considering a departure

Malick Fofana wants to remain at Olympique Lyonnais if the French club secures qualification for the Champions League.

According to Belgian transfer journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Fofana would like to compete in Europe’s leading competition with Lyon during the 2026/27 season.

Should Lyon successfully navigate this week’s qualifying match the winger reportedly intends to continue his development with Les Gones and complete another full campaign in France before leaving.

Tavolieri describes the decision as clear in Fofana’s mind.

Potential blow to Roma’s pursuit

The development could further complicate Roma’s interest in the 21-year-old, who has been identified as a leading candidate to strengthen the left side of Gian Piero Gasperini’s attack.

The Giallorossi reportedly reached an agreement over personal terms with Fofana’s representatives but have not finalized a deal with Lyon.

Roma’s financial restrictions have also represented a significant obstacle. Reports in Italy suggested a possible operation worth approximately €35 million plus bonuses, while the Friedkin ownership was considered unlikely to authorize such an investment without a major sale.

Lyon have delayed any consideration of Fofana’s future until after their Champions League playoff. Qualification could now result in the player choosing to remain for the entire season.

Roma continue assessing alternatives

Gasperini has made it clear that he only wants Roma to sign an attacking winger who provides genuine added value and is fully committed to joining the club.

If Fofana decides to stay at Lyon, Roma will be forced to focus on alternative options during the final days of the transfer window.

The club have already seen approaches for Jamie Bynoe-Gittens and Mathys Tel rejected, while Christopher Nkunku is pushing to return to RB Leipzig.

For now, Fofana’s future appears directly connected to Lyon’s Champions League qualification. A successful result this week would make a transfer to Roma increasingly unlikely.
