The former Giallorossi star believes Gasperini’s side can compete near the top after an important summer transfer campaign.
Zbigniew Boniek is optimistic about Roma’s prospects ahead of their opening Serie A match against Fiorentina.
Speaking to Corriere della Sera, the former Roma star acknowledged that the Giallorossi are not among the leading title candidates but believes a positive season is possible.
“My hope is that Roma have an important campaign, even if they are not among the favourites for the Scudetto,” Boniek said.
The former Poland international believes Roma’s opening results could shape the atmosphere surrounding Gian Piero Gasperini’s team.
“It will be fundamental to start well,” he explained. “In Italy, if you get a few matches wrong, they immediately begin criticizing you. On the other hand, starting on the right foot could allow the enthusiasm of the Roma supporters to push you to dream. Even competing near the top should be considered an important achievement.”
Boniek praises Roma’s transfer business
Roma will also return to the Champions League after a seven-year absence, creating additional demands on Gasperini’s squad.
“It is a serious commitment that requires high concentration for many months and a deep squad,” Boniek said.
Although Gasperini is still waiting to discover whether Roma will make any further additions, Boniek offered a positive assessment of the club’s transfer activity.
“Perhaps Gasperini still wants a few pieces, but the club has made moves and signed important players,” he added. “Castro, for example, is a centre-forward I like, and he will be an excellent alternative to Malen.”
