The Italian Football Federation has aligned itself with UEFA ahead of the FIFA presidential election scheduled for March 2027.
The Italian Football Federation has officially withdrawn its support for Gianni Infantino’s candidacy in the 2027 FIFA presidential election.
The FIGC announced its decision on Wednesday, citing concerns shared with UEFA and its president, Aleksander Čeferin, regarding recent initiatives promoted by Infantino in relation to the governance and development of international competitions.
The FIFA presidential election is scheduled to take place in March 2027.
FIGC president Giovanni Malagò said the federation will continue supporting a European vision for the future of football.
“We will continue to work alongside UEFA and other European federations to promote a vision of football based on merit, solidarity, sustainability and the centrality of fans,” Malagò said.
“We recognize ourselves in a model of dialogue, listening and shared responsibility that has thus far allowed football to grow, innovate and simultaneously defend its founding principles.”
The FIGC described the decision as a clear and transparent expression of its position ahead of the election.
Italy’s withdrawal of support represents a significant development for Infantino as UEFA and its member associations assess the future governance of the international game.
