Sunderland have reportedly agreed a deal to sign the Lyon winger, but Crystal Palace have launched a dramatic late attempt to intercept the transfer.
The race to sign Malick Fofana has taken another major turn on transfer deadline day, with Crystal Palace attempting to hijack Sunderland’s agreement for the Lyon winger.
According to David Ornstein, Sunderland reached an agreement to sign Fofana and prepared a five-year contract for the Belgian international.
Lyon also granted the player permission to travel and undergo his medical examinations on Monday, placing Sunderland on the verge of completing the transfer.
Crystal Palace Make Last-Minute Move
However, Santi Aouna reports that Crystal Palace have entered the race at the last moment and are attempting to snatch Fofana from Sunderland.
Palace had previously explored a move for the 21-year-old, although earlier reports suggested that the player was not convinced by the proposed destination. Their renewed intervention now creates uncertainty over a deal Sunderland appeared ready to complete.
It remains to be seen whether Crystal Palace can persuade Fofana to change his decision or whether he will proceed with his proposed move to Sunderland.
Roma Set to Miss Out on Fofana
Roma followed Fofana extensively throughout the summer and reportedly reached an agreement over personal terms with the player’s representatives. The Giallorossi, however, never completed an agreement with Lyon and subsequently concentrated on alternative attacking targets.
Fofana had reportedly hoped to join Roma and work under Gian Piero Gasperini, but the financial requirements of the operation prevented the Italian club from completing the transfer.
The winger’s future now appears destined for the Premier League, although the identity of his next club remains uncertain as Sunderland and Crystal Palace compete for his signature.
