The Roma star has thanked his longtime international teammate and captain following Messi’s decision to end his historic Argentina career.
Paulo Dybala has published an emotional tribute to Lionel Messi following the legendary number 10’s retirement from international football.
Messi announced his decision after more than two decades representing Argentina, bringing an end to one of the greatest international careers in football history. The news was officially acknowledged by the Argentine Football Association.
Dybala shared the dressing room with Messi for several years and helped Argentina fulfill their greatest ambition by winning the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
Dybala: “What a Privilege to Share So Many Moments With You”
The Roma forward opened his letter by reflecting on how Messi inspired him long before they became international teammates.
“What a privilege it was to share so many years and so many moments with you, Leo. Since I was a child, you inspired me to want to be like you.”
Dybala explained that playing in similar attacking roles encouraged him to study Messi’s game throughout his development.
“Because we played in similar positions, I always watched you. I tried to learn and imitate many of the things you did, even though you made them look easy when they seemed almost impossible for everyone else.”
Dybala Recalls World Cup Triumph With Messi
Dybala later had the opportunity to play alongside his childhood inspiration and share Argentina’s historic World Cup triumph.
“Then I was fortunate enough to share the pitch with you, learn even more from you and fulfill the greatest dream of all together.”
The Roma number 21 appeared as a late substitute during the 2022 World Cup final and converted his penalty in Argentina’s shootout victory over France.
Dybala concluded his message by thanking Messi for everything he contributed to the national team.
“Thank you for everything you gave to our national team. It was an honor to be part of this journey alongside you, Captain.”
Messi leaves Argentina as a World Cup winner, a two-time Copa América champion and the country’s record appearance-maker and goalscorer.
