The Italian midfielder is approaching his return to group training and could become Roma’s first-choice attacking midfielder on the left.
Roma concluded the summer transfer window after adding Santiago Castro and Rodrigo Mora to Gian Piero Gasperini’s attacking options.
Castro provides an alternative to Donyell Malen at centre-forward, although the two strikers could also play together in certain matches. Mora was the only attacking midfielder signed during the summer, but Roma were unable to deliver the specialist left winger requested by Gasperini.
The coach must now find an internal solution for that position, with Lorenzo Pellegrini approaching his return from injury.
Pellegrini approaching return to group training
Pellegrini is expected to gradually resume training with the rest of the squad in the coming days, potentially beginning as early as this week.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Italian is currently considered the most likely player to occupy Roma’s left-sided attacking-midfield position once he is fully available.
Pellegrini represents the most natural internal solution after Roma failed to sign another winger. Gasperini used the 30-year-old in a similar area last season, where he could move centrally to connect midfield and attack while still contributing without the ball.
His return would provide Roma withcto carry more creativity and experience in the final third Specialists.
Mora and Soulé offer alternatives
Pellegrini will not be guaranteed a starting place. Mora’s rapid adaptation gives Gasperini an exciting alternative, while Matías Soulé can also operate from the left when required.
Soulé started alongside Paulo Dybala behind Malen against Lecce and scored during Roma’s dominant first-half performance. However, Gasperini may prefer the Argentine in a more natural right-sided or central attacking role over the course of the season.
Mora’s versatility could allow him to compete directly with Pellegrini, support Dybala or enter matches from the bench as the game’s rhythm changes.
The lack of a new left winger leaves Roma without the specialist profile Gasperini wanted, but Pellegrini’s return and Mora’s emergence provide the coach with several possible solutions.
Competition between Pellegrini, Mora and Soulé could now become one of the most important tactical stories of Roma’s season.
