Former Roma forward Stephan El Shaarawy is reportedly set to rejoin Genoa, returning to his boyhood club 16 years after leaving and reuniting with Daniele De Rossi.
Stephan El Shaarawy is going home. Not to Rome, but to the club where his professional journey began.
Sixteen years after leaving Genoa, the former Roma attacker has reportedly reached an agreement to return to the Rossoblù. El Shaarawy has accepted the opportunity to work under Daniele De Rossi, his former Giallorossi teammate and current Genoa coach.
The 33-year-old spent the summer as a free agent but has now found an opportunity to continue competing at the highest level. His decision brings him back to the city and club where he took his first steps in senior football before departing in 2010.
El Shaarawy Set to Reunite With De Rossi at Genoa
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, Genoa could officially announce El Shaarawy’s arrival between today and tomorrow.
The Italian international must first complete his medical examinations and sign his contract, the final steps before beginning his second spell with the Ligurian club.
His reunion with De Rossi adds further significance to the move. The pair shared several seasons together at Roma, but they will now work alongside one another in very different roles.
Possible Como Call-Up for El Shaarawy
El Shaarawy could return to Genoa’s squad sooner than expected.
The forward may receive his first call-up for Friday’s match against Como, although his inclusion could initially be symbolic as he works towards full match fitness following the summer without a club.
El Shaarawy developed in Genoa’s academy and made his senior debut for the club before establishing himself in Serie A. His return to Marassi now offers him the opportunity to complete another chapter of his career where it originally began.
