Players making their first UEFA Champions League appearance will wear a special Debut Patch during the 2026/27 competition, with each patch later transformed into a unique signed Topps card.
UEFA has introduced a new recognition for players making their first appearance in the Champions League.
Beginning with the 2026/27 season, every player making his debut in Europe’s premier club competition will wear a special UEFA Champions League Debut Patch.
The initiative was created by UEFA and UC3 in collaboration with Topps. It is intended to celebrate one of the defining moments of a player’s career while creating a connection between the on-field occasion and football supporters.
The patch will make its first appearance during Matchday 1 of the league phase, when Roma begin their Champions League campaign.
How the Champions League Debut Patch Works
The Debut Patch will be incorporated into the Champions League Starball badge on the sleeve of a player’s match jersey.
It will only be worn during the match in which the player makes his first appearance in the competition. The recognition also applies to substitutes who enter the pitch, not only those named in the starting lineup.
UEFA hopes the visible patch will allow clubs, broadcasters and competition partners to highlight Champions League debuts as they happen.
Once a player has appeared in the competition, he will not be eligible to wear the patch again—even if he later transfers to another club participating in a UEFA competition.
Match-Worn Patches to Become Unique Topps Cards
Following the player’s debut, the distinctive blue section of the patch will be removed from the match-worn jersey and authenticated.
Each patch will be identified, securely packaged and accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity before being transferred to Topps.
Topps will then place the patch inside a unique one-of-one UEFA Champions League trading card signed by the player. The process is designed to protect the authenticity and traceability of the item from its removal from the shirt through to its inclusion in the finished collectible.
Debut Jersey Will Retain a Permanent Detail
Removing the blue section will not completely erase the recognition from the jersey.
The underlying Starball badge will retain a visual reference commemorating the player’s first Champions League appearance, allowing the match-worn shirt to remain a personal piece of memorabilia.
The patch’s design and positioning were developed alongside Topps and ID Unlimited, UEFA’s official patch supplier.
Roma’s return to the Champions League means several members of Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad could wear the new patch during the club’s opening league-phase match against Fenerbahçe.
