Roma’s opening Champions League opponents face a UEFA disciplinary case following the incidents that occurred after Fenerbahçe’s playoff victory over Lyon.
UEFA have opened disciplinary proceedings against Fenerbahçe and two of the Turkish club’s players, Mattéo Guendouzi and Mason Greenwood.
The case relates to the incidents that followed Fenerbahçe’s Champions League playoff victory over Olympique Lyonnais. The Turkish side advanced to the league phase with a 3-2 aggregate win after prevailing 2-1 in France.
The development arrives only one week before Roma begin their Champions League campaign against Fenerbahçe in Istanbul on Thursday, September 10.
What Happened After Lyon-Fenerbahçe?
Guendouzi and Greenwood were reportedly involved in a post-match confrontation following the final whistle in Lyon.
Guendouzi, who previously represented Lyon’s rivals Olympique Marseille, allegedly made provocative gestures toward the home supporters and shouted in support of his former club. Greenwood, another former Marseille player, subsequently joined him.
The situation escalated into an altercation involving players and members of staff near the tunnel area.
Guendouzi later claimed that members of the Lyon support had directed insults toward his family during the warm-up and throughout the match.
Fenerbahçe Prepare Their Defence
Fenerbahçe subsequently confirmed that UEFA had initiated disciplinary proceedings against the club, Guendouzi and Greenwood.
The Turkish club said it would provide the relevant evidence and submit its defence to UEFA’s disciplinary authorities in an attempt to protect the interests of Fenerbahçe and its players.
No punishment has been announced at this stage. It therefore remains unclear whether Guendouzi or Greenwood will face suspensions affecting their availability against Roma.
Roma Await UEFA’s Decision
Any potential suspension would be significant for Fenerbahçe ahead of Roma’s visit to Istanbul.
Guendouzi and Greenwood are two prominent members of the Turkish club’s squad, but both remain eligible to face the Giallorossi unless UEFA issues a sanction applying to the opening league-phase fixture.
Roma will therefore monitor the disciplinary process while continuing their preparations for the match.
Gian Piero Gasperini has already selected the 24 players included in Roma’s Champions League squad.
Roma Begin Champions League Campaign in Istanbul
Roma will face Fenerbahçe at 6:45 PM CEST on September 10 in the opening match of their European campaign.
The trip to Istanbul is the first of eight league-phase fixtures for Gasperini’s team, who will also face Real Madrid, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain.
Supporters can find every fixture, date and kickoff time in Roma’s complete 2026/27 Champions League schedule.
