Gian Piero Gasperini must evaluate the Argentine attacker’s condition before Saturday’s Serie A match and Roma’s Champions League opener against Fenerbahçe.
Roma are monitoring Paulo Dybala after the attacker experienced muscular fatigue ahead of Saturday’s match against Atalanta.
According to Angelo Mangiante, the issue has slowed Dybala during the final stages of Roma’s preparation for the Serie A encounter at the Stadio Olimpico.
Gian Piero Gasperini will now assess the Argentine’s condition before determining how—and whether—to use him against Maurizio Sarri’s side.
Dybala’s Atalanta Role Under Evaluation
The early indications do not suggest that Dybala has suffered a confirmed muscular injury. However, Roma are unlikely to take unnecessary risks with their Champions League campaign beginning next week.
Dybala has been central to the Giallorossi’s excellent start, helping Gasperini’s side secure consecutive 4-0 victories over Fiorentina and Lecce.
The 32-year-old provided three assists in the opening victory over Fiorentina and has formed a productive attacking partnership with Donyell Malen.
If Dybala is not ready to start against Atalanta, Matías Soulé and Rodrigo Mora are the leading candidates to play behind Malen. Both players have already scored during Roma’s opening two league matches.
The latest team news will also influence Gasperini’s predicted lineup for the Serie A showdown between Roma and Atalanta.
Champions League Opener Influences Decision
Roma will begin their Champions League campaign away to Fenerbahçe on Thursday, September 10.
That match arrives only five days after the Atalanta fixture, creating an important decision for Gasperini as he manages Dybala’s workload.
The coach recently rejected the idea of resting a healthy Dybala simply as a precaution, explaining that he prefers to keep the attacker on the pitch whenever he feels capable of continuing.
However, the emergence of muscular fatigue changes the situation. Gasperini must balance Roma’s immediate need against Atalanta with the importance of having Dybala available in Istanbul.
The Argentine has been included in Roma’s official UEFA squad for the 2026/27 Champions League and is expected to play an important role in the club’s return to the competition.
Roma Await Final Dybala Decision
Roma are expected to continue monitoring Dybala before making a final decision on his availability.
Even if he receives a call-up, Gasperini could choose to begin with the Argentine on the bench and use him only if required during the second half.
Mora, Soulé and Santiago Castro provide alternative solutions, while Malen is expected to continue leading the attack after scoring five goals in his opening two appearances.
Further information could arrive when Gasperini addresses the media before Saturday’s match.
