The former Inter and Italy goalkeeper believes the defending champions remain Serie A’s most complete team but is interested to see how Roma develop under Gian Piero Gasperini.
Walter Zenga has assessed the Serie A title race and included Gian Piero Gasperini’s Roma among the teams that have captured his attention.
Speaking to Corriere della Sera, the former Inter and Italy goalkeeper discussed the leading contenders for the Scudetto after the opening weeks of the season.
“I am intrigued by Gasperini’s Roma,” Zenga said when asked which teams could compete for the championship.
Roma Make Perfect Start Under Gasperini
Roma have begun their second season under Gasperini with consecutive 4-0 victories over Fiorentina and Lecce.
The Giallorossi have combined attacking production with defensive solidity, scoring eight goals without conceding. Donyell Malen has been the leading figure with five goals, while Paulo Dybala, Matías Soulé and Rodrigo Mora have contributed behind him.
The opening performances have increased optimism around the club, although Gasperini has repeatedly warned that September is too early for definitive discussions about the title.
The Roma coach recently explained why Scudetto dreams should not be suppressed, while emphasizing the importance of remaining grounded in reality.
Zenga Names Inter as Serie A Favorites
Despite his interest in Roma, Zenga believes Inter remain the team to beat.
“It is easy to say that Inter are the favorites,” he said. “They are the team that have won two league titles and reached two Champions League finals over the last four years.”
Inter have also opened their title defence with two victories from two matches, reinforcing their position among the strongest teams in the division.
“Inter are certainly the most complete team,” Zenga continued. “The others are struggling to keep pace with them, but their direct competitors have all strengthened very well.”
Roma Face First Major Test Against Atalanta
Roma’s title credentials will receive an early examination against Atalanta at the Stadio Olimpico.
Both teams enter the third matchday with six points, making the fixture an important opportunity for Roma to demonstrate that their dominant start can be sustained against stronger opposition.
Gasperini’s side must also overcome a difficult recent record against Atalanta. Roma have failed to win any of the last eight meetings between the clubs.
Zenga is not yet placing Roma ahead of Inter in the title hierarchy, but his interest reflects the growing attention surrounding Gasperini’s developing team.
