Mario Hermoso: “Roma Want to Carry Their Serie A Form Into Europe”

Mario Hermoso believes Gian Piero Gasperini’s aggressive style is ideally suited to the Champions League as Roma prepare to begin their European campaign against Fenerbahçe.

Hermoso spoke to Sky Sport shortly before Roma’s pre-match press conferenceerence in Istanbul.

The Spanish defender discussed his dramatic equalizer against Atalanta, his previous Champions League experience and the mentality Gasperini has instilled throughout the squad.

Here are Hermoso’s complete pre-match comments.

Have you had time to reflect on your goal against Atalanta?

“Of course. We also need to play every three days,” Hermoso said.

“We are competing in Europe, and it is important for us to play these types of matches. We want to begin this competition well.”

Hermoso scored in the 90th minute of Roma’s dramatic 2-1 comeback against Atalanta.

Matias Soulé then completed the turnaround in stoppage time, securing Roma’s third victory from their opening three Serie A matches.

Is the Champions League football’s most difficult competition?

Hermoso made 34 Champions League appearances during his time with Atlético Madrid and understands the level Roma will encounter.

“Of course. The best teams play in this competition and participate in these types of matches,” he explained.

“You have to produce a great season to earn the opportunity to play in them, so we are happy.”

“We want to make a strong start to the competition here in Istanbul, and we want to play these types of matches.”

Roma are returning to the Champions League after an absence of more than seven years. Their previous appearance came during the 2018/19 campaign, when they reached the round of 16.

Is Gasperini’s football suited to the Champions League?

Hermoso believes Gasperini’s high-pressure and vertical approach possesses the characteristics required to compete in European football.

“Yes. When the coach speaks and communicates this message, that is exactly what he wants: to play a pressing game with high intensity and European characteristics.”

“We have confidence and the desire to understand how we can find all the solutions the coach presents to us in the dressing room and during every training session.”

“That allows us to have the tactical and technical answers required to win these types of matches.”

Roma’s aggressive identity has become increasingly visible this season. Gasperini’s team have scored 10 goals in three league matches and arrive in Istanbul on a run of eight consecutive Serie A victories.

Are Roma entering Europe with greater confidence?

Hermoso believes Roma are approaching the Champions League with increased confidence following their development under Gasperini.

“Of course. When the coach arrived at Roma, he instilled in each of us the mentality required to grow as a team and integrate all the players who arrived.”

“We have developed since last season. All my teammates are very happy with the way the team are playing and with the significant step we have taken toward this competition.”

“We want to continue what we are doing in the league and reproduce it here as well.”

Gasperini has also emphasized Roma’s growing technical quality, explaining that the squad has benefited from a full season of working together.
