Istanbul police have detained five people as part of an operation targeting the alleged black-market sale of tickets ahead of Fenerbahçe’s Champions League match against Roma.
Five people have been detained in connection with the alleged illegal resale of tickets before tonight’s Champions League meeting between Fenerbahçe and Roma.
According to Turkish newspaper Türkiye Gazetesi, Istanbul police carried out the operation before the league-phase match, which kicks off at 18:45 CEST—12:45 PM ET.
Police Target Illegal Ticket Sales
The operation was conducted by the Sports Security Branch of the Istanbul Police Department as authorities attempted to prevent tickets from being sold through unauthorized channels.
Simultaneous operations reportedly took place across four Turkish provinces, resulting in five suspects being taken into custody. Police are also said to have seized several digital devices during searches of the properties involved.
The investigation into the detained individuals remains ongoing. No further information has been released concerning the identities of the suspects or the number of tickets allegedly involved.
Huge Demand for Fenerbahçe vs Roma Tickets
Demand for the match has been extremely high, with the stadium in Kadıköy expected to be virtually sold out.
The occasion carries particular significance for both clubs. Roma are returning to the Champions League after an absence of more than seven years, while Fenerbahçe are preparing to appear in the main phase of the competition for the first time in almost 18 years.
The home supporters are expected to create an intense atmosphere, while approximately 2,300 Roma fans have travelled to Istanbul for the opening match of the league phase.
