Mile Svilar believes Roma produced the better football against Fenerbahçe but must continue improving after beginning their Champions League campaign with a 1-1 draw.
Roma returned to the Champions League with a point after drawing 1-1 against Fenerbahçe in Istanbul.
Bryan Cristante gave Gian Piero Gasperini’s side the lead before the hosts responded in the second half, leaving the Giallorossi with a frustrating draw from their opening league-phase match.
After the final whistle, Mile Svilar spoke to Sky Sport about the result and his performance.
Svilar Reflects on His Saves
Svilar made several important interventions during the match to prevent Fenerbahçe from completing the comeback.
The Roma goalkeeper explained his approach to one of his one-on-one saves before discussing his attempt to stop the equalizing goal.
“On the one-on-one chance, I had read the situation and the ball struck my foot. I tried to do the same on their goal, reading it a little earlier—but I could not manage it. That is fine. We move forward.”
The Serbian-born Belgian international remains one of Gasperini’s most dependable players and once again played an important role on a difficult European night.
“An Individual Action Can Decide the Result”
Svilar also highlighted the difference in intensity between domestic football and the Champions League, where individual quality can quickly change a match.
“There is always the feeling that anyone can score. At this level, an individual action can determine the result.”
Despite the disappointment of losing the lead, Svilar felt Roma’s overall performance provided reasons for encouragement.
“I think we played the better football. The draw is a fair result, but we can improve our quality even more and collect points.”
Roma therefore begin their first Champions League campaign in seven years with one point. The team will now turn its attention back to Serie A, where it will face Torino on Monday.
