Former Roma defender Vincent Candela believes the Giallorossi must show the same personality displayed in Serie A when they begin their Champions League campaign against Fenerbahçe.
Roma return to the Champions League against Fenerbahçe tonight, ending an absence of more than seven years from Europe’s most prestigious club competition.
Ahead of the match in Istanbul, Vincent Candela discussed the challenge awaiting Gian Piero Gasperini’s team during an interview with Corriere dello Sport.
Candela Warns Roma About Istanbul Atmosphere
Candela expects a difficult evening inside one of European football’s most intense stadiums, but believes Roma have demonstrated that they are prepared for the challenge.
“Playing in Turkey is never easy, but we need to play as we did in the first three league matches. Above all, we cannot hurt ourselves or risk injuries. The atmosphere will be fiery, but it is all very fascinating. I think we are on the right path. You could see it in the comeback against Atalanta: this Roma never die.”
Roma have started their Serie A season with three consecutive victories, including a dramatic 2-1 comeback against Atalanta at the Stadio Olimpico.
That resilience has increased optimism before the club’s long-awaited return to the Champions League.
Candela Compares Dybala to Totti and Zidane
Candela also identified Paulo Dybala as a potential difference-maker in Istanbul, highlighting both his European experience and technical quality.
“Yes, he is one of the few players who has a lot of experience at this level. Technically, he is an asset to football. He still produces things that you almost never see anymore—things like Totti, Zidane and Ronaldo. He is in excellent physical condition after a year of work with Gasperini.”
Dybala travelled with the squad and is available for the opening league-phase fixture, with Gasperini recently declaring that Roma are a better team when the Argentine is on the pitch.
Gasperini’s Connection With Roma
Candela believes Gasperini’s European experience and growing connection with the club could prove equally important.
“He won the Europa League and played in the Champions League with Atalanta, so he knows these stages. Above all, he already has a strong sense of belonging with Roma.”
The Frenchman revealed that Gasperini’s commitment extends beyond tactics, praising the coach for learning about Roma’s history and building relationships with former players.
“You do not need 15 or 20 years. If you are loyal, honest and passionate, you show it immediately—and people can feel and see it. He thinks about football from morning until night and wanted to get to know symbols such as Totti and me. That is not something to take for granted.”
