Marcus Thuram has urged Inter to take Roma seriously ahead of Saturday’s highly anticipated Serie A meeting at the Stadio Olimpico.
Inter will travel to the capital after completing a comeback victory over Udinese, while Roma enter the match with a perfect league record following their 2-0 win against Torino.
Gian Piero Gasperini’s team have collected 12 points from their opening four matches and won nine consecutive Serie A games dating back to last season.
Thuram demands the right approach against Roma
Inter were forced to recover from a two-goal deficit against Udinese, raising questions about the team’s approach during the opening stages of matches.
Thuram believes occasional difficult starts are understandable during a demanding season, but stressed that Inter cannot afford to make the same mistakes against Roma.
“I don’t think we need to be shaken up before we react,” Thuram said, as quoted by Tuttosport. “We play many matches and sometimes you can get the approach wrong, but the most important thing is knowing how to respond.
“I don’t know whether it can be considered a signal, but a match lasts 90 minutes. We knew we could recover, and we did.
“We have 19 opponents in the league. Roma are one of them, we must take them seriously and do what we have to do in the next match.”
Speaking about Inter’s early difficulties in a separate passage reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Thuram added: “We must not put ourselves in difficult situations, and tonight we did that. However, we produced a great response.”
Thuram praises Inter teammate Bonny
The French forward also offered considerable praise to Ange-Yoan Bonny, highlighting his quality and willingness to contribute to the team.
“He makes himself available to the team,” Thuram said. “He is a player of the highest level. This year, he also played at the World Cup, and every time he plays, he makes the difference. For me, he is one of the best players in Serie A.”
Bonny provides Cristian Chivu with another attacking option alongside Thuram and Lautaro Martínez as Inter prepare for one of their biggest domestic tests of the early season.
Roma and Inter prepare for sold-out showdown
Saturday’s match will bring together two of the leading contenders at the beginning of the Serie A campaign.
Roma have scored 12 goals and conceded only once across their opening four league matches. Inter remain the benchmark in Italy because of the quality and depth of Chivu’s squad, but the Giallorossi will have an opportunity to demonstrate how significantly they have progressed under Gasperini.
Inter could enter the contest without two important players. Hakan Calhanoglu and John Stones are both injury doubts after suffering muscular problems.
The match has already sold out at the Stadio Olimpico, setting the stage for one of the most anticipated fixtures of the season.
