Luciano Moggi discusses Roma’s Scudetto chances under Gian Piero Gasperini

Luciano Moggi: Roma can compete for the Scudetto with anyone

Luciano Moggi believes Roma possess the quality required to challenge for the Serie A title following their perfect start to the season.

Speaking to Radio Radio, the former football executive discussed his recent meeting with Gian Piero Gasperini, Roma’s development and Saturday’s highly anticipated match against Inter at the Stadio Olimpico.

Moggi reveals details of Gasperini meeting

Moggi explained that his conversation with the Roma coach focused on the team’s performances and the strengths of the current squad.

“Gasperini does not need advice; he is already an excellent coach,” Moggi said. “We spoke about the match and various other things. The team is what it is. Roma are first in the table, but regardless of what they are currently showing, they have an important core and a strong style of play. They also have someone capable of scoring goals in attack. Those were the things we discussed.”

Roma have won their opening four Serie A matches and currently share the top of the table with Inter. Gasperini’s side have also extended their domestic winning streak to nine consecutive games when including the end of last season.

“Roma have everything more than Juventus”

When asked which areas Roma possess an advantage over Juventus, Moggi initially attempted to avoid the comparison before offering an emphatic assessment.

“Let’s move on to another question. Leave it alone—Roma have everything more,” he said.

“I want to leave the coaches out of it, but they certainly have more in defence, midfield and attack. Even when he is not in his best condition, Gasperini can afford to leave Koné on the bench. Juventus would certainly be a different team with a player like Koné in midfield.”

Koné was initially rested against Torino after experiencing knee discomfort in Roma’s Champions League draw with Fenerbahce. The French midfielder was introduced during the second half of the 2-0 victory.

Moggi backs Roma’s Scudetto challenge

Moggi believes the arrival of Donyell Malen has helped Roma reach another level in attack.

“Roma can compete for the Scudetto,” he explained. “Since Malen arrived, the team has gained greater autonomy. If they continue like this, they can compete with anyone.”

Malen has scored six goals in the opening four league matches, becoming only the third Roma player to surpass five goals at this stage of a Serie A season.

However, Moggi still considers Inter the more complete team heading into Saturday’s early Scudetto showdown.

“At this moment, Inter probably have something more in every department,” he concluded. “It is a contest across every area of the pitch.”
