Paulo Dybala and Nahuel Molina could travel to Argentina during the upcoming international break, despite being omitted from Lionel Scaloni’s latest squad.
According to Il Messaggero, the Argentine Football Association is considering inviting every member of the country’s 2022 World Cup-winning squad to Lionel Messi’s expected final international appearance.
Argentina are scheduled to face Benin at the Monumental on October 6, with the occasion reportedly being prepared as a farewell celebration for Messi.
Dybala and Molina could attend Messi’s Argentina farewell
Dybala and Molina were both members of the squad that defeated France in the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar.
Although neither Roma player was selected for Argentina’s upcoming friendlies, the pair could still travel to Buenos Aires to participate in the tribute to their former international teammate.
Roma have not yet received a formal request from the AFA. The situation is expected to be discussed after Saturday’s Serie A match against Inter at the Stadio Olimpico.
Any invitation would mean all five of Roma’s Argentine players could be involved in the international break.
Scaloni has already selected Matias Soulé, Santiago Castro and Leonardo Balerdi for the matches against Bolivia, Burkina Faso and Benin.
Roma’s growing Argentine influence
Roma’s Argentine group has become an important part of Gian Piero Gasperini’s squad this season.
Dybala remains one of the coach’s most influential players and has developed a productive attacking partnership with Donyell Malen. Soulé has also made a decisive contribution, scoring the late winner against Atalanta after providing the corner for Mario Hermoso’s equalizer.
Balerdi impressed on his first Serie A start against Torino, while Molina and Castro have provided Gasperini with additional options from the bench.
The five players will offer Roma important experience and personality when the Giallorossi face Inter in Saturday’s early-season clash at the top of Serie A.
After that match, Soulé, Castro and Balerdi will join Scaloni’s squad. Dybala and Molina must wait to discover whether they will also return home to honour Messi alongside Argentina’s other 2022 world champions.
