Roma are reportedly considering a move for experienced defender Matteo Darmian as the club continues to evaluate the free-agent market.
According to Tuttomercatoweb, Roma have held contact with Darmian in recent weeks over a potential move to the Italian capital. The 36-year-old has remained without a club since his contract with Inter expired on June 30.
Darmian would reportedly be willing to accept a one-year contract on reduced wages, potentially making him an affordable option for the Giallorossi.
Darmian could provide experienced cover for Gasperini
Roma’s squad is considered slightly short in terms of numbers, particularly with the club competing in Serie A and the Champions League this season.
Darmian’s versatility could therefore appeal to Gian Piero Gasperini. The former Manchester United defender can operate as a right-back, wing-back or on the right side of a three-man defence.
His tactical flexibility and extensive experience at both domestic and international level would provide Gasperini with additional cover without requiring Roma to pay a transfer fee.
Darmian previously worked in a three-man defensive system at Inter, where his intelligence, positioning and reliability made him a valuable member of the squad. He would also bring further experience of competing for major trophies and managing a demanding schedule.
Darmian considering offers from Dubai
No final agreement has been reached between Roma and the player. Darmian is expected to make a decision regarding his future over the coming days.
The defender has also reportedly received proposals from clubs in Dubai, presenting him with an alternative to remaining in Serie A.
Roma must now decide whether to proceed with an offer or continue with the options already available to Gasperini. The club previously evaluated several free agents after the summer transfer window closed but ultimately chose not to rush into an additional signing.
Darmian could represent a low-cost opportunity to complete the squad, although the reported contact has not yet developed into a formal agreement.
