Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde is expected to miss the Champions League clash against Roma after suffering a serious injury to his left ankle.
Real Madrid have received a major injury blow ahead of their Champions League visit to the Stadio Olimpico.
Federico Valverde suffered the injury during the Madrid derby against Atletico Madrid and has subsequently been diagnosed with a grade-three sprain of his left ankle.
The severity of the problem places the Uruguayan midfielder at serious risk of missing the match against Roma on Wednesday, October 14.
Valverde Expected to Miss Roma Clash
Valverde is a fundamental part of José Mourinho’s Real Madrid side due to his intensity, versatility and ability to provide balance in midfield.
His potential absence would force Mourinho to consider alternative options for the second match of the Champions League league phase.
Roma will host Real Madrid at the Stadio Olimpico on October 14, with kickoff scheduled for 9:00 p.m. local time.
Although the Spanish club has not provided a precise recovery timetable, a grade-three ankle sprain normally requires an extended period on the sidelines. Reports in Spain indicate that Valverde could be unavailable for several weeks and potentially as long as three months.
Real Madrid Confirm Serious Ankle Injury
Real Madrid initially announced that Valverde had sustained severe trauma to his left ankle before further examinations determined the full extent of the injury.
“Following tests carried out today on our player Fede Valverde by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a grade-three sprain of his left ankle,” the club’s medical update read.
“His recovery will continue to be monitored.”
Valverde will undergo rehabilitation before Real Madrid can establish a more definitive date for his return. Given the proximity of the Champions League fixture, however, his availability against Roma appears highly unlikely.
