Leonardo Balerdi has expressed his determination to make the most of his return to the Argentina squad after missing the 2026 World Cup through injury.
Leonardo Balerdi has returned to the Argentina national team following his impressive start to the season with Roma.
Lionel Scaloni recalled the central defender for Argentina’s upcoming international fixtures, giving Balerdi another opportunity to establish himself within the Albiceleste squad.
The call-up carries additional significance for the 27-year-old after a right soleus injury forced him to withdraw shortly before the 2026 World Cup.
Balerdi Reflects on Argentina Return
Speaking after arriving at Argentina’s training camp, Balerdi explained that he had been eagerly awaiting another opportunity with his country.
“I was left with an enormous desire to return,” Balerdi said. “Coming back here represents a new challenge for me, and I have to approach it in the right way.”
The defender had originally been included in Scaloni’s World Cup squad but suffered the injury shortly before Argentina’s opening match. Marcos Senesi was subsequently called up to replace him.
His return therefore represents an opportunity to move beyond that disappointment and begin a new chapter with the national team.
Strong Roma Start Earns Balerdi Recall
Balerdi has regained Scaloni’s confidence following his summer move to the Italian capital.
Roma signed the Argentine defender from Marseille to strengthen Gian Piero Gasperini’s defensive options ahead of a demanding season across Serie A, the Champions League and Coppa Italia.
Despite arriving near the end of the transfer window, Balerdi has quickly adapted to his new surroundings and provided Roma with additional experience, aggression and composure in possession.
His ability to defend in space and advance the ball from the back makes him particularly suited to Gasperini’s system.
Three Roma Players Join Argentina
Balerdi is one of three Roma players selected by Scaloni for the international period.
Matias Soulé and Santiago Castro have also joined the Argentina squad, while Paulo Dybala and Nahuel Molina were not included.
Argentina are scheduled to face Bolivia on September 30, Burkina Faso on October 3 and Benin on October 6.
The international break will give Balerdi an opportunity to add to his senior appearances and strengthen his position within Scaloni’s defensive group.
