Roma reshaped their sporting department during the summer, with the transition from Frederic Massara to Tony D’Amico affecting several transfer negotiations that were already underway.
Massara had begun working on multiple potential signings before leaving the club. However, the arrival of D’Amico as Roma’s new sporting director led to a review of the club’s plans, with certain targets abandoned in favor of different profiles.
One of those targets was Genoa defender Johan Vásquez. According to Claro Sports, Massara had pushed strongly for the Mexican international, and Roma had emerged as one of the clubs closest to securing his signature.
Vásquez also attracted interest from teams in Germany, Turkey and Spain, as well as other Italian clubs.
Roma changed direction after Massara’s departure
Roma reportedly took concrete steps toward signing Vásquez, who is regarded as an important player and dressing-room leader at Genoa.
The negotiations stopped following the change in Roma’s sporting leadership. Massara’s departure and D’Amico’s arrival prompted the club to reassess its transfer strategy, ultimately leading the Giallorossi to pursue other defensive targets.
Vásquez was later monitored by Juventus, who also evaluated a possible move for the centre-back. No agreement materialized, however, and the Mexican remained at Genoa to continue his career with the Rossoblù.
The episode highlights how Roma’s change of sporting director influenced a number of transfer decisions during a summer of significant restructuring at Trigoria.
